Proud Oberlin College alum. Currently based in Oakland, CA, and trying to learn it all at UC Berkeley from my post in the MBA program. Former college basketball player and coach. Podcaster and writer. Top of mind: Economic Sociology and Planetary Health.

I spent my childhood moving into and out of neighborhoods on both sides of the Ohio River, which previously served as this country’s “freedom line.” In a region fraught with the legacy of slavery, my analytical mind conducted a “census” at every stop, evaluating the disparity of resources and opportunities between them. Fortunately, a timely upswing allowed me to finish high school in a better-resourced community and eventually enroll at Oberlin College.

With this foundation, I’ve always been interested in the (often misguided) ideas we have about what we’re good at, and good for. Today, I’m trying to overcome them. In the way I work, learn, and create. For both myself and others.

I’ve strived for this in the classroom and as a researcher. On the basketball court – working with 3rd graders picking up a ball for the first time, and NBA veterans. In unwrapping my identity – tied up in manhood, race, and misconceptions of power. And now I’m striving for it as I try to make myself useful in the climate fight.

Right now, I’m in a period of tremendous growth. And I want to share what I learn along the way, as honestly and as truthfully as I know how. Some things I’m currently trying to practice are:

• Not letting my desire to be “right” impede the relationships I care about

• Minimizing distractions. Getting back into deep work and “flow”

• Courage
